A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Southwark Playhouse Borough
Southwark Playhouse presents… A Midsummer Night’s Dream from 5 – 27 September at Southwark Playhouse Borough.
“A lot of people think that Shakespeare isn’t for them. They believe that it’s long and boring, that it’s pretentious, that it just doesn’t make any sense. But, I promise you, this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will completely change your mind about all of that. The production uses all sorts of tricks to make the story accessible and understandable to everyone, whether this is the first time you’ve seen the play, or whether you’re a seasoned Shakespeare buff. It will delight, surprise, and entertain you. And it’s going to be properly laugh-out-loud funny – just as a comedy about how silly humans are should be!”
So says director Toby Hulse, an acclaimed director of theatre for younger audiences, and who will be bringing Shakespeare’s classic comedy to Southwark Playhouse Borough this September.
Making a production of this play accessible for everyone, whether they are 8 or 88, is central to what Southwark Playhouse has been about ever since it was founded just over thirty years ago. As an organisation, Southwark Playhouse has supported many hundreds of emerging theatre artists in taking their first steps in the industry. Recent Olivier Award Winners Operation Mincemeat and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button had much of their early life on our stages.
But alongside this, they have provided a huge range of free, year-round participatory opportunities for people of all ages, whether that be through weekly drama groups – or, in this instance, through A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Because alongside the evening performances, Southwark Playhouse are also hosting nine special matinees solely for local schools – which will allow them to invite nearly 2,000 young people from across two local boroughs in to see a full-scale production of a Shakespeare play for free. As you can imagine, as soon as the call went out, those tickets were snapped up as this is such a special opportunity for young people who might not otherwise have much access to live arts themselves.
Southwark Playhouse really hopes that you take the magical trip back to 1905 with them this September, as Eric, Nancy, Arthur, Joan, Cecil and Robert spend an afternoon putting on a show… that might turn out to be just a bit more magical than they had ever thought possible…
