A potion from the darker side of Sugarlandia Don Papa Rum unveils Don Papa Gayuma

Don Papa Rum, the premium single island rum from the island of Negros in the Philippines, is to launch its newest expression, Don Papa Gayuma – a super premium rum which pays homage to the unique rituals performed by the shamans of Mt. Kanlaon, the active volcano on Sugarlandia (local name for Negros), and the Island of Siquijor, or Isla del Fuego (‘the Island of Fire’); Don Papa Gayuma, historically, meaning ‘love potion,’ will be available from December 2022.

Don Papa Gayuma, bottled at 40% ABV and inspired by these mysteryshrouded traditions of old, is distilled from 100% sugarcane molasses from Negros island and matured in the foothills of Mt. Kanlaon: firstly in ex-bourbon American oak casks for three years, before going through a double barrel finish, spending 6 months in high toast ex-Rioja barrels and 3 months in rich, warming and smoky toasted oak casks, which first held Scotch whisky from the legendary isle of Islay.

The result is a rum dark amber in colour with a distinct peaty nose, a soft and delicate vanilla, light orange peel notes, deep cacao, with hints of cloves and mint. It’s intense smokey tinge and spicy finish creates a perfectly balanced liquid with lingering character and depth. The Island of Siquijor, as it was once known during the Spanish colonial times, has long been fabled as a place of dark intrigue, mysticism and magic. For centuries it has been deeply connected to the ways of Shamanic tradition; a place where those seeking love once visited, in the hope of drinking the Gayuma: a warming, aromatic potion, deeply enriched with local magic and aid to contain mythical aphrodisiac properties.

Don Papa Gayuma is presented in an intricate tropical gothic design, reflecting aspects of the darkly mystical rituals and traditions of Sugarlandia and Siquijor; depicting the shape-shifting characters and creatures found there and the irreverence of Papa Isio, the revolutionary hero who inspired the Don Papa name.

The new Don Papa Gayuma brings another dimension to the Don Papa drinking experience with its growing portfolio including the original Don Papa 7-year-old, Baroko, Don Papa 10, Rare Cask, Sherry Cask, Sevillana Cask, Rye Aged and last year’s Port Cask release.
