How to Protect Your Belongings When Moving Home
Moving home is exciting, but getting everything from one property to another safely can be a challenge. From glassware and electronics to furniture and sentimental items, there is plenty that can become scratched, chipped or broken along the way.
Fortunately, careful packing can make moving day far less stressful. Taking a little extra time before loading the van will help keep your possessions protected and make unpacking easier once you arrive.
Start Packing Earlier Than You Think
Leaving everything until the final few days often leads to rushed packing. Give yourself plenty of time and begin with belongings you rarely use, such as books, ornaments, seasonal clothing and items stored in the loft.
Working room by room can also help you stay organised. Clearly label each box with its contents and destination, particularly when something inside is fragile. This makes it easier to decide where boxes should be placed in the removal van and saves time at your new home.
Choose Suitable Packing Materials
Strong boxes and good-quality protective materials are worth having when moving. Avoid overfilling boxes or relying on old containers that have become damp, torn or weakened over time.
Delicate possessions need extra attention. Glasses, plates, picture frames and ornaments can be individually wrapped using bubble wrap rolls before being carefully placed inside a sturdy box. Fill empty spaces too, as this prevents items from shifting around during transport.
For heavier belongings, use smaller boxes wherever possible. A huge box filled with books might seem efficient, but it can quickly become difficult to lift and may break under the weight.
Protect Furniture Before Moving It
Furniture can easily pick up scratches and dents when being carried through narrow hallways or loaded into a van. Remove drawers, shelves and detachable parts where possible, keeping screws and fittings together in clearly labelled bags.
Protective covers or moving blankets can be placed over larger pieces. Pay particular attention to corners and exposed edges, which are often the first areas to get knocked.
It is also worth measuring doorways and larger furniture before moving day. Knowing whether a sofa or wardrobe will fit through the door can prevent frantic dismantling at the last minute.
Pack Valuables Separately
Certain possessions are better kept with you rather than placed in the removal van. Important paperwork, jewellery, medication, passports, keys and small valuable electronics should be packed separately.
Prepare a small essentials bag or box as well. Include chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic kitchen supplies and anything else you might need during your first evening. You will appreciate not having to search through dozens of boxes after a long day.
Take Your Time on Moving Day
When moving day finally arrives, resist the temptation to rush. Lift boxes carefully, secure items properly in the vehicle and avoid stacking heavy containers on top of fragile ones.
A successful move is not simply about getting everything to the new property quickly. With careful preparation, suitable packing materials and sensible organisation, your belongings can arrive safely, leaving you free to concentrate on settling into your new home.
