The perfect Kentish night out: Pairing cocktails, casino and cuisine

Kent may well be known for being a conservative, countryside corner of the UK, but it has some great nights out. While casinos aren’t always first on the mind for an outing, that’s precisely why they can feel special. They’re a way to dress up that little bit more and expect glamour for the night. But, you can’t just turn up to the casino cold, first you need to whet the whistle…

The pre-match meal

Kent is blessed with great food. The idea here is to have a relatively sophisticated meal to get you in the mood for the night ahead, but you still want a lively, good time. You’re likely eyeing up Grosvenor Casino in Broadstairs, and this is conveniently near Westwood Cross. Both are great for food, and if you’re looking to go high-end off the bat, Stark is a Michelin-starred gem that offers a tasting menu that is both intimate and inventive. Booking is essential of course, but it’s quite a memorable culinary experience. For something refined but a little bit more relaxing, The Little Sicilian serves authentic, high-end Italian fare that’s perfect for fuelling you with some carbs for a long night at the tables.

The main event

Once your dining is complete and you’re raring to go, it’s time to head to the main event. Grosvenor is a good choice for a broad choice of classic games, with many roulette tables and even poker tables. If you’re used to testing your luck from the comfort of your own home before trying the real thing, playing a few hands of blackjack at NetBet is a good way to familiarise yourself with the rules. But, at places like Grosvenor, a lot of people there are also unwise to the environment.

If you’re a left-brained type who likes maths, it’s worth heading to the blackjack tables. The rules are simple, yet there’s some sense of control over your decisions, making it feel more like a game where you’re included. If you just want a roll of the dice to lead the game and let you relax more, roulette is a good option.

The casino has a great bar but perhaps the most novel thing about it is the ability to get a sandwich at 2am, if that’s how the night really ends up. The cocktail lounge is great, and you can catch sporting events on the TVs if you time it right.

Second-wind cocktails

You would have likely ended up having a few martinis or even some contemporary creations in Grosvenor. If you’re looking for a second wave of cocktails in a new spot, the sea-view bars in Broadstairs are fantastic. Reign Bar and Lounge does great cocktails, though closing time could be an issue. The Albion Inn is perched atop the cliff and offers stunning views and a selection of fine Kentish ales, or you could opt for the Royal Albion Hotel with a more traditional, sophisticated setting for a late-night tipple.

A night at the casino is all about the theatre. It’s an experience that feels special, and we should keep it that way by reserving it for special occasions.
