Chapel Down launch NEW Great Minds Drink Alike partnership 2018

Chapel Down, England’s leading winemaker who has launched their new Great Minds Drink Alike partnership for 2018, sharing three new red wines from Europe for the first time.

The wines have been individually curated by Chapel Down’s Head Winemaker Josh Donaghay-Spire and marked with the Great Minds seal of approval.

The second year of The Great Minds Drink Alike campaign focuses on three wines from producers who share a similar ethos to Chapel Down: respect for the land and a willingness to push boundaries. These limited edition wines come from carefully selected partners and are an extension of the Chapel Down portfolio.

The collection includes: No’1. Syrah by Domaine Gayda: The renaissance in the Languedoc-Roussillon continues as the leading producers strive for greater and greater quality using modern winemaking techniques. “France’s new world,” is the term coined by Jancis Robinson for the region, as it produces reds with “a Bordeaux-like structure to support much wilder, more Mediterranean flavours”.

Intrigued and keen to learn more, our winemaker Josh went down to the region in summer of 2018 to meet one of the leading producers, Tim Ford (who originally hails from Kent), at Domaine Gayda. An immediate friendship was struck and Josh was taken by the quality and complexity of the wines. Tim has blended a specific wine for this selection from their premium Chemin de Moscou (30%) and Figure Libre (70%) sites.  Selected for its incredible depth of flavour, this Syrah blend includes parcels from both the 2016 and 2017 harvests.

Vincent Chansault, Winemaker of Domaine Gayda says, “Our fully organic vineyard is focused on a quest for quality and innovation, and we’re honoured to be partnering with Chapel Down, England’s most exciting drinks producer. While our grapes and growing technique are rooted in tradition, our winery is all about the most modern equipment and technology, as with Chapel Down’s production.’

No’2. Crianza by De Bardos

Elegant, fresh and well-balanced, this Crianza has been aged in French-oak barrels for 14 months and fully reflects the personality of the Ribera del Duero region. Full-bodied aromas of dark fruit jam, tobacco and leather are complimented by a smoothness on the palate and an elegant finish with gentle tannins.

Finally No’3. Sass’alSole by Tenuta Tondaia

This cracking wine hails from a small winery in Civitella Marittima, owned by wife and husband team Silvia and Piernicola Spinelli. Sass’alSole is 100% Sangiovese, made using organic techniques and has been part-aged in barriques for 14 months. It has aromas of cigar box, leather and spice, with a palate of cherry, black tea and dried fruit; the tannins are elegant and well softened from extended maturation.

Mark Harvey, Managing Director, Chapel Down Wines and Spirits says: ‘We’re forever curious to work with other leading wineries around the world. To share, to learn and to forge deep friendships over a glass or two of wine. And for a long time we’ve wanted to share our discoveries with the growing congregation at Chapel Down!

“Likewise, Josh Donaghay-Spire, our Head Winemaker, is frequently asked for recommendations on interesting wines from beyond our shores. So we’re thrilled to now share these wines from the Great Minds Drink Alike collection, curated by Josh. These three reds are from friends in France, Spain and Italy, each of whom are producers who share our curiosity to discover the new, the bold and the interesting. And ultimately, to create deliciously drinkable wines for us all to enjoy.

Josh Donaghay-Spire, Chapel Down Head Winemaker says, “Making Chapel Down wines is an enormous privilege, but it is also hugely enjoyable to meet like-minded producers in other regions and to collaborate. As a winemaker it expands my skills and knowledge and I think these three wines will each grace any table. I’m proud to have them sit alongside our own wines and I can’t recommend them any more than saying they are absolutely of the quality any Chapel Down drinker would expect from us.”
