The former home of the late antiquarian, Denys Bower, the castle now houses his fascinating Egyptian, Buddhist, Jacobean, Stuart and Japanese collections including incredible Samurai armour and swords, and treasures from Ancient Egypt. Discover Victorian ‘upstairs downstairs’ rooms with hands-on activities and enjoy a stroll in 35 acres of beautiful grounds complete with a lake, courtyard rose garden, woodland walks and herbaceous borders.
The quintessentially English Tea Room has sunny courtyard seating and offers delicious homemade cakes, as well as the legendary Chiddingstone cream tea and light lunches – all served to you at the table on traditional vintage china.
Every year the castle hosts a long list of special events to suit all ages including Ancient Egyptian Day on Sunday 13th August and the Country Fair on Sunday 10th September.
Don’t miss the opportunity to handle authentic 3,000-year-old objects, listen to family-friendly talks by Egyptologists, have a guided tour of our Ancient Egyptian-themed garden, make a clay mummy and lots more – all of this is free besides usual admission charge to the castle.
The Country Fair celebrates the British countryside with displays of traditional country activities alongside entertainment, music, refreshments and stalls. It’s just £6 for adults and £2 for children (aged 5-13) for admission to the fair.
The castle is open 11am to 5pm Sunday to Wednesday from April to the end of October.
