De Martino Wine Dinner at ABode Canterbury – Wednesday 20th March 2013
For those who are interested in fine Chilean wine, ABode Canterbury is hosting a dinner with one of the country’s most notable properties, De Martino, on Wednesday 20th March.
Founded in 1934 De Martino are a fourth generation, family owned winery in Chile. Their motto is “Reinventing Chile” and this informs every aspect of their pursuit in exploring Chile’s diversity and unlocking its terroir potential. Their 300 hectares of vineyard on the home estate in Maipo have been organically farmed for over a decade. They pick early to retain natural freshness and acid and to reduce alcohol levels. All their wines are 100% wild yeast fermented. They use less new oak than most Chilean producers and they are experimenting with making wines in clay amphora, or “tinajas” as they are called in Chile – an ancient artisan practise that dates back hundreds of years. They were pioneers of the Carmenere grape variety, being the first Chilean producer to export a varietally labelled Carmenere in the mid 1990s. Their commitment to exploring the unique terroirs of Chile has led to them developing a range of single vineyard wines from all over the country utilising often overlooked parcels of ungrafted, old vines. In 2009 they became the first carbon neutral winery in Chile. In recognition of these achievements they were awarded Winery of The Year in 2012 by the Wine of Chile Association
This event will be hosted by Sebastian De Martino accompanied by Patricia Sliwa from Les Caves de Pyrene. The evening will start at 7.00pm with canapés and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, taking seats at 7.30pm in the dining room for a superbly matched menu prepared by executive chef, Jean-Marc Zanetti. Guests will enjoy a range of different wine styles from De Martino.
