DFDS LAUNCHES NEW DUTY-FREE COACH TRIP SERVICE – THE EASY WAY TO STOCK UP FOR CHRISTMAS

Ferry company DFDS has launched a new one-day coach trip to its duty-free shops in France with pick up stops across Kent, just in time for shoppers to stock up on gifts for Christmas.

The new coach service runs from Thursday to Sunday with stops at Maidstone, Ashford, Folkestone, and Dover. Tickets are just £30 return, including the ferry journey from Dover to Dunkirk, a free meal onboard during both outward and return journeys, and coach transportation to and from the duty-free shop at Dunkirk, where shoppers can make savings on beers, wines, spirits, fragrances, and toys.

Duty-free shopping returned for UK travellers on 1 January 2020, but DFDS’ research shows that many Brits are unaware of the changes. In a survey of shoppers carried out before its new Dunkirk shop opened, the ferry company found that 47 per cent of respondents did not know that they no longer have to pay tax (‘duty’) on a range of products when travelling between the UK and the EU. The return of duty-free means passengers can swap the high street for the high seas and save up to 50 per cent on their purchases.

In the years since duty-free shopping was last seen on cross-Channel services, traveller’s purchasing preferences have changed. As many people are looking for bargains on perfumes and cosmetics (61 per cent) as for wines (51 per cent), beers and spirits (64 per cent). These changing tastes are reflecting in DFDS’ duty-free offering, with fragrances, luxury goods, LEGO, designer sunglasses, and technology featuring in the new shops.

Passengers travelling to Britain can now bring back 42 litres of beer, 18 litres of still wine and nine litres of sparkling wine, or four litres of spirits, without paying duties. Each member of a group or family aged over 18 is entitled to this personal allowance. Current offers include:

  • 1 litre The Kraken black spiced rum £12.79 – save £18.12
  • 1 litre Glenmorangie Original £29.99 – save £19.44
  • Five cases 24 x 33cl bottles Bira Moretti £84.95 – save £46.15
  • Four cases Anakena Birdman Sauvignon Blanc £71.76 – save £96.24

Passengers have the potential to save more than £220 on a trolley full of duty-free products including premium beers, wines, and spirits. The duty-free shop at Dunkirk is located at the passenger terminal building, right in front of the freight and passenger lanes, making it quick and easy to load bulky items.

A second DFDS duty-free shop will open in Calais in early 2022. For more information about DFDS’ duty-free products, prices and special offers click here.
