Inspired by British Cycling? Heart of Kent Hospice launches Cyclo Sportive 2016

With British Cycling’s membership surpassing 125,000 for the first time in its history and GB’s historic success at the Rio Olympics, Heart of Kent Hospice is hoping to inspire Kent cycling fans to hop on their saddles and raise funds for the charity.

Cyclo Sportive 2016 is open to all, whether leisure riders, club cyclists or Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggin-types, and offers the choice of three circular routes – 38km, 65km and 100km – through some of Kent’s loveliest villages and country lanes.

The fundraising event takes place on 2nd October from East Malling Research Centre and, for the first time, Heart of Kent Hospice has introduced a short Fun Cycle so all the family can join in.  Mini Laura Trotts and Jason Kennys can challenge themselves on the closed, private roads around the Research Centre and do as many loops as their legs will carry them.

Evans Cycles Maidstone will be donating their time and expertise to provide the Cycle Doctor Service at the start of the ride and Marshals, First Aiders and water stops will be dotted throughout the routes.  Professional chips timings are available to all riders of the 38km, 65km and 100km distances, while the charity will be handing out medals for all finishers, including those taking part in the Fun Cycle.

To mark the Hospice’s 25th anniversary, the charity is challenging participants to raise a minimum of £25 sponsorship. Sarah Pugh, Chief Executive at Heart of Kent Hospice: “Cyclo Sportive is a relatively new fundraising initiative in our 25-year history but the routes touch almost all the areas where we prove end of life care and support.

“Whether cycle fans are participating because they want to break a personal record, have a fun day out with friends, or to raise funds in memory of a loved one, we thank them for helping us to reach even more people within our catchment area.”

Cyclo Sportive takes place on 2nd October 2016 from East Malling Research Centre, New Road, East Malling, Kent ME19 6BJ. Registration costs £35 for the 100km ride, £30 for the 65km and 38km rides and £5 for the Fun Cycle.  Participants must be over 18 apart from the Fun Cycle where all ages are welcome. To take part please call the Fundraising Team on 01622 790195 or email tom.abbott@hokh.co.uk
