On the Foodie Trail in… Faversham

With a lovely community feel, ample country inns and picturesque cobbled lanes brimming with splendid boutiques, the quaint medieval market town of Faversham is cherished for its charm and agricultural heritage. It’s also the perfect spot to sample and savour Kent’s excellent rural fare.

Macknade

With farm-fresh goodness in mind, a non-negotiable stop on any foodie trail through Faversham is beloved food hall, Macknade. Having been at the forefront of Kent’s thriving food and drink scene for over 175 years, Macknade is local foodie heaven. Inside, you’ll find an award-winning butchery, a renowned delicatessen counter offering one of the largest ranges of cheese and charcuterie anywhere in the UK, a carefully curated wine store and row upon row of bountiful fresh fruit and veg. Making the most of this outstanding produce, with Macknade as their kitchen larder, the intimate café’s team of talented chefs showcase top-quality ingredients with a modern flair. Their popular Farmers Breakfast, crispy serrano and scrambled eggs or salmon and avocado focaccia is sure to go down a treat before you fill your basket with artisan picks and irresistible deli finds to take home.

Produce picked and nourishingly fulfilled, next on the list is to head to the town centre to hit the shops. Faversham boasts a myriad of cafés, tea rooms and coffee hubs for a morning snack and beverage between leisurely browsing, try the quintessential Secret Garden on the Quay for traditional, freshly baked treats and warm welcomes, or The Refinery for great roasted coffee, loose leaf teas, perfectly baked cakes or even a delicious cocktail. Community hub ours  has also captured the hearts of locals and beyond since opening last year – a cosy little spot for photo-worthy hot or iced coffee served just how you like it, fresh sandwiches and laid-back vibes.

The Sun Inn

When lunchtime calls, Faversham continues to excite. For artisan breads, deli provisions, flaky pastries and generously filled sandwiches and toasties, Grain & Hearth is a must-visit, celebrated for its delightful sourdough and beverage selection. If you’re in the mood for something a little more hearty and traditional, settle in at The Sun Inn a 14th century pub serving comforting dishes and classic pub lunches in a characterful setting.

If it’s the ever-pleasing flavours of Italy you’re craving, then when it comes to dinner, long-loved Posillipo offers just the thing. Expect delectable, Naples-inspired pasta, seafood and pizzas, handcrafted with the utmost love and care.

Sunny evenings in Faversham are best spent beside the water at Standard Quay, a former commercial port steeped in history that has been transformed into a trendy leisure and shopping destination. The Quay’s Papà Bianco is unmissable for freshly prepared pizzas, summer spritz and a lively outdoor dining experience, alongside its regular roster of live music and events. Just nearby, Baltic House Wine Bar offers another relaxed spot for tipples, with a wide selection of wine, spirits and cocktails, as well as tasty grazing platters and more live music nights.
