Leeds Castle 900 Carnival of History: 27th & 28th July 2019
Leeds Castle in Kent will host an incredible ‘Carnival of History’ on the 27th & 28th July 2019 in partnership with Arts Council funding, to celebrate its 900th anniversary and everyone is invited!
The dazzling riot of colour will use large-scale costumes and re-enactors to travel through nine centuries of the Castle’s history across two days. Local communities will come together to bring this unusual and spectacular event to life.
Come and join the procession, which will wind its way from the Castle Island, around the estate to culminate in an impressive finale set against the stunning backdrop of “the loveliest castle in the world”.
Leeds Castle is the jewel in Kent’s crown and the Carnival of History will join acclaimed national professional arts companies, community participants, dancers, band, volunteers and re-enactors, to create a vibrant and exciting procession, built around key moments in the extraordinary history of the county’s landmark.
The Carnival will be brought to life by collaborations with Shademakers UK and leading professional street arts performers.
Shademakers UK will work with and mentor students at The University for the Creative Arts in Rochester, Kent, and local artists to create costumes. The Theatre Film and Performance Design students will work on this project as part of their second year course work and The Leeds Castle Foundation aims to give something back to local communities with the Carnival of History as local artists will be equipped with new skills in creating the costumes. The event will also provide a public platform for local people already involved in creative activities to showcase their talents.
The Leeds Castle Foundation is an independent charity. We receive no government or crowd funding and depend entirely on your support. All profits raised go towards our mission to preserve Leeds Castle and the wider estate for future generations.
