Life on the Cobbles: Family-Friendly Days in Kent’s Cobbled Towns

March is made for movement; for hopping from street to street, darting into shops, catching the instantly familiar smell of sea air and following the low hum of chatter drifting out from cafés and pubs. This is Kent at its finest, when sun-warmed stone feels good underfoot, doors start to prop open again and cobbled streets gently pull you along rather than slow you down. As the days begin to draw out, March is the perfect time to become more curious. Coffee first. Always coffee first. Then browsing, wandering, tasting, doubling back and discovering something you did not plan on at all.

From cathedral cities to harbour towns and market streets, each stop in this journey offers its own perfectly paced day out, with places to explore, spots to eat and corners to linger in.

Canterbury

Canterbury is a place that draws on curiosity. Step away from the main streets, and the city quickly shifts pace. Hours can be lost in the narrow, cobbled lanes where bookshops sit beside bakeries, coffee queues spill onto the pavement and where the cathedral catches your breath each time it appears between rooftops

Morning

Canterbury Garage Coffee

Start early at Garage Coffee on Sun Street. It is small, lively and always smells incredible, with locals stopping in for flat whites and pastries before the day gets going. Coffee in hand, wander towards the cathedral through quieter back streets, letting the city wake up around you.

From here, drift into The King’s Mile, where independent shops and galleries line the cobbles and encourage you to dip in and out. Make time for Catching Lives Bookshop, set inside Canterbury’s famously crooked house. Shelves are packed with secondhand finds and every purchase supports a local charity.

Continue to Palace Street, one of the city’s prettiest stretches, where glimpses of the river change the pace of the busy streets. Lily’s Social Kitchen is a lovely stop for a fresh coffee or a relaxed brunch-style bite, while Café Chambers is a favourite for pancake lovers. If the weather is kind, stroll towards Westgate and along the river path, watching boat tours glide past as conversations bounce across the water.

Canterbury Cathedral

Afternoon

Head to The Goods Shed for lunch, a Canterbury favourite for good reason. Whether you choose the restaurant or browse the market stalls, it is vibrant, seasonal and proudly rooted in Kent. There’s a wonderful, rustic buzz about the space with each vendor proud of their produce. We also highly recommend grabbing a fresh sourdough loaf from Dockers.

After lunch, wander back towards the cathedral precincts. Even if you have visited before, the scale and detail always impress. Take Mercery Lane slowly, then peel off into the smaller streets nearby, where independent shops reward a little aimless wandering.

iK’s unmissable hotspot!

Finish the day at Corkk, just moments from the cathedral. Specialising in English and local wines, it is a relaxed, welcoming place to pause and watch Canterbury settle into the evening.

Rochester Cathedral

Rochester

Brimming with romantic timber-framed houses and imposing architecture – from soaring spires to storied castle walls – Rochester is a destination where well-trodden cobbled streets lead to a wealth of Kentish highlights.

Morning

Start your day on the perfect note with brunch at Café Lounge, with coffee served just how you like it, fresh eggs and impressively stacked fluffy pancakes. You’ll then want to make your way back up the High Street to explore the unique indies and boutiques that call this iconic street home. Browse Copenhagen Blue for stylish womenswear, pop in to Dickens House Wine Emporium for fine quality wines and spirits, before finishing up at Capture the Castle for chic homeware and gifting.

Afternoon

Before a well-deserved lunch pitstop, a visit here isn’t complete without admiring the captivating landmarks of Rochester Cathedral and Rochester Castle. Located just a stone’s throw from one another, these remarkable structures invite for hours of historical discovery. Rochester Cathedral’s fantastic lineup of exhibitions and events are also a must-catch, ranging from art installations to musical entertainment.

Just steps from here for a leisurely bite to eat and artisan tipples, The Cheese Room Botanicals awaits for a cheesy refuel of freshly prepared snacks, boards and toasties.

If you’re feeling adventurous, peel off to the nearby village of Upnor. Known for its postcard-pretty cobbled streets and excellent River Medway views,  you’ll also find Upnor Castle here, an Elizabethan artillery fort that will reopen to the public at the end of the month.

Fish at 55

iK’s unmissable hotspot!

Serving up the finest local delights from both land and sea, Fish at 55’s flavour-packed menus highlight delicious seafood, great cocktails and sensational hand-crafted sushi.

Deal

Deal is a place of narrow cobbled streets and quiet corners, where it is easy to wander off course and find yourself somewhere unexpected. Independent shops, cafés and galleries appear one after another, and everything feels close, walkable and pleasingly unpolished.

The Rose Hotel

Morning

Begin on Lower Street and Middle Street, where some of Deal’s best independents sit along gently uneven cobbles. King’s Coffee Company is a reliable first stop for a hot beverage and something sweet or savoury.

From here, browsing comes naturally; vintage shops, interiors stores and small galleries line the street, their doors opening straight onto the cobbles. Make time for Smugglers Records, a long-standing favourite with crates worth rummaging through, or stop at The Hoxton Store for beautifully curated homeware and gifts. If you are visiting on a Saturday, Deal Market adds extra colour, with stalls selling local produce, flowers and street food.

Afternoon

As lunchtime approaches, drift back towards the seafront. The Rose Hotel is a popular choice for relaxed but well-thought-out food, while V Gastro & Bar offers seasonal plates in a laid-back setting. On brighter days, Middle Street Fish Bar is a must; picking up food to take away and eating on the beach feels very Deal.

After eating, wander along the promenade towards Deal Castle, then loop back into town through the smaller streets behind the High Street. These cobbled lanes pull you inland again, past wine bars and cafés, as the afternoon gathers pace. A post-ramble sweet treat now in order, The Lane’s picture-perfect afternoon teas, fresh bites and refreshing drinks list is sure to please.

The Lane

iK’s unmissable hotspot!

Classy and experimental, The Blue Pelican is a beachfront gem of a Japanese restaurant that’s won rave reviews for its punchy Tokyo-inspired menus. Faultless hospitality, fresh, seasonal ingredients and, of course, the unbeatable essence of umami, are all delivered in a characterful setting brought to life by tasteful blues and a chilli pepper-coloured chessboard floor.

Faversham

A historic market town with a working creek, Faversham offers a slower but deeply satisfying kind of wandering, where independent shops, bakeries and pubs are woven into everyday life.

Faversham

Morning

Begin around Market Place and Court Street, where timber-framed buildings and uneven paving set the tone. Independent shops sit alongside long-standing businesses, making browsing feel unhurried and local. Grain and Hearth Bakery is a good place to start, whether you are stopping for coffee and something freshly baked or picking up bread to take away.

From here, wander through the surrounding streets, dipping into small independents and antique shops before the town fully wakes up. Make time for Macknade Fine Foods, a Faversham institution and a brilliant place to browse local produce, Kentish wines, and carefully chosen treats to take home.

Afternoon

Follow the pull of the water towards Faversham Creek, where boats bob gently along the banks and wide skies open up. The Shipwright’s Arms is a great spot for a drink right by the water, before heading to Posillipo for a late lunch or early dinner. Sitting above the creek, it is the perfect place to be as the day draws on.

Macknade

iK’s unmissable hotspot!

No trip to Faversham would be complete without a stop at Court Street’s buzzy coffee shop, Ours. Known for its cute, contemporary décor and an innovative matcha menu to make any fan of the Japanese tea smile, the loaded sourdough specials, salads and toasties are also a big hit with hungry brunchers.

Cobbled streets have a way of setting the pace; they slow you down just enough to notice what is around you – a shop window worth stopping for, the smell of fresh coffee, the pull of the sea or the quiet hum of a market town going about its day. From city streets to coastal lanes, these corners of Kent are made for wandering and March is the perfect time to lace up your shoes and follow where the cobbles lead.
