insideKENT took a trip to Belgo in Bromley to conquer their Lobsterfest offering, which runs until 31st August. Accessible via the Queen’s Garden (A21 Kentish Way) or from intu shopping centre, Belgo Bromley is all about beer, mussels and frites, friends, family and fun, whatever the occasion.
As we arrived the staff greeted us and sat us in the restaurant area, whilst browsing the widely impressive beer menu. Highly recommended by our waiter I ordered a pint of Belgo Pils 4.2%. A basket of fresh bread with butter and Aioli plus our starter of Gruyère cheese croquettes, served with Belgo beer relish followed.
The menu looked great with many Belgian-inspired dishes to choose from, including 12 various ways to have your moules. One that stood out for us was Monroe, an iconic bombshell, leffe blonde beer, pancetta and shallots (just like this month’s cover story).
For our mains my guest went for the beef short rib (£14.95) slow cooked with creamed mash, glazed carrots and savoy cabbage. The beef melted in your month and came away from the bone with little effort. My little 6-year-old guest had the battered haddock strips, served with frites and sugar snap peas from the kids menu and even I was in impressed by the portion size.
As it was Lobsterfest it would have been rude not to take part and just before my Lobzilla (£19.95) arrived, the waiter kindly bibbed me up ready to take it on. A whole lobster, grilled and formidable, was served with frites, aioli dip and salad. The taste was amazing and cooked perfectly in garlic butter; even my little guest tried lobster for the first time and asked for more (as well as playing with the claws). I can say that not one bit was wasted and the bib was spotless.
There are two lobster dishes on offer to tempt your taste buds: A lobster cocktail, served with a salad of crisp baby gem lettuce, sugar snaps, carrots and chicory in a sharp lemon dressing (£9.95) or the whole lobster salad with a lemon dressing, chicory, gem lettuce, sugar snaps (£19.95). Belgo are donating £1 from every lobster dish to the National Lobster Hatchery to support their ‘buy one set one free’ campaign. Alternatively you can also add half a lobster to any dish from the burger or grill section.
The regular menu delivers a great range of Belgian food offered in stylish surroundings. The waiters will talk you through signature selection of Mussel Pots (Thai Green is a speciality), familiar main courses and can recommend a truly unique Belgian beer to accompany your meal. Belgo’s extensive beer menu offers something for everyone from the light and refreshing fruit beers to some of the darkest Belgian beers around, all finished off with the best waffles in town!
The bar opens at 11am every day and food is available from midday. You can also everyday deals such as the Express Lunch (a set price lunch menu) or the Beat the Clock (a great dinner deal and kid’s menu).
