NY-TEA: A Taste Of The Big Apple

This June, Balthazar Restaurant in Covent Garden will launch a unique afternoon tea inspired by its New York City roots. Balthazar opened in Manhattan’s Spring Street in 1997, and on London’s Covent Garden in 2013. NY-Tea diners will get a taste of the Big Apple without leaving London as Balthazar puts an American inspired spin on this classic British pastime.

The NY-Tea will start off with an array of traditional finger sandwiches filled with typical New York ingredients. These will include: a pastrami bun with egg, pickle and mustard; coronation chicken and apricot; smoked salmon and lemon creme fraiche; and cucumber, mint and homemade hummus for a modern vegetarian offering.

To follow, guests will enjoy a creative selection of pastries. These include ‘Spring Street’ named after the signature recipe for Balthazar New York’s famous baked cheesecake, served on a bed of pistachio crumble and finished with a raspberry glaze. Also on the menu will be:

  • The Liberty PB&J eclair filled with peanut butter and vanilla-infused apricot jam, complete with an image of Lady Liberty
  • Balthazar’s famous pecan pie topped with a bourbon and chocolate marmalade chantilly and chocolate shard proudly bearing the Balthazar logo
  • Cookies ‘n’ cream tart made with white chocolate cookie and coconut mousse, filled with lemon curd, and decorated with stars and stripes
  • A zesty Key Lime pie in white chocolate casing, finished with a soft meringue swirl and coconut crumble

Alongside the NY-Tea, Balthazar’s talented bar team have delved into their extensive American whiskey collection and created the refreshing The Yankie cocktail, a combination of Makers Mark, Boker’s Bitters, a sugar cube and Blanquette sparkling wine.

The NY-Tea at Balthazar is available from Monday June 10, from 3pm to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and 3pm to 6.30pm Sunday. The NY-Tea is priced at £29.95 per person, and the NY-Fizz Afternoon Tea, served with The Yankie cocktail or a glass of Delamotte champagne is priced at £39.95 per person.
