One of Kent’s Biggest Family Adventures Has Arrived This Summer

This summer, Dartford is inviting families to step into the pages of one of Britain’s best-loved children’s books.

From 17 July to 13 September, Dartford We’re Going on a Bear Hunt transforms the town into a giant outdoor art trail, where beautifully decorated bear sculptures lead visitors on an adventure through Dartford town centre and Bluewater. Inspired by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury’s much-loved classic, the free trail combines art, exploration and family fun, making it an ideal day out during the school holidays.

Each sculpture has its own story. The Big Bears have been individually designed by professional artists, while the Bear Cubs have been brought to life by local schools and community groups, creating a colourful celebration of creativity across the borough.

Visitors can download the official Bear Hunt app (£1.99) to navigate the trail, discover the inspiration behind each design, unlock rewards and collect every sculpture along the way. Every app download supports ellenor’s hospice care, while the adventure takes families through Dartford town centre, Bluewater and some of the area’s cafés, parks and independent businesses.

The trail marks the first public art trail commissioned by Dartford Borough Council and the first led by ellenor, making it the charity’s biggest community project to date. Created in partnership with Wild in Art, local businesses, artists, schools and community groups, it invites visitors to explore the Borough of Dartford, with beautifully decorated sculptures dotted throughout Dartford town centre and Bluewater.

Behind the artwork is an opportunity to help more people understand hospice care. ellenor is the hospice charity for North Kent and Bexley, providing specialist palliative care for babies, children, adults and their families. Supporting people from the point of diagnosis, much of its care is delivered in people’s own homes, alongside specialist care at its Inpatient Ward in Gravesend, helping people live as well as possible with a life-limiting illness.

Every Big Bear has been sponsored by a local business that has helped make the trail possible, and when the adventure comes to an end, the sculptures will be auctioned to raise vital funds so ellenor can continue supporting local families.

Whether you’re determined to find every bear or simply looking for a memorable family day out, Dartford We’re Going on a Bear Hunt offers the chance to discover public art, explore Dartford and be part of a community project with a lasting impact. Every bear found helps tell the story of a community coming together to support local hospice care.
