Steinway Hall London Marks 150 Years of Craft, Culture and Creativity
There’s something special about walking through the doors of Steinway Hall London. Perhaps it’s the weight of history – 150 years of it – or the knowledge that legends like John Lennon, Martha Argerich and Lang Lang have graced those very rooms.
This year, as the Hall celebrates its sesquicentennial, it’s clear that this remarkable space is far more than a showroom. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of music. Founded in 1875, Steinway Hall London became the first European home of Steinway & Sons, arriving five years before the Hamburg factory even opened its doors in 1880. In those early days, every single piano was handcrafted in New York and shipped across the Atlantic – a journey that speaks to the dedication and vision that built this institution.
For a century and a half, the Hall has been a sanctuary for musical excellence. It has welcomed an extraordinary roster of artists: Vladimir Ashkensky, Alfred Brendel, Alicia de Larrocha, Dudley Moore, Imogen Cooper, Paul Lewis, Yuja Wang, Julian Joseph and Jacob Collier, to name just a few. John Lennon himself composed “Imagine” on a Steinway Model Z
prepared in the Hall’s own workshop – a moment that forever linked this space to one of music’s most iconic songs.
Today, Steinway Hall London houses three showrooms, a full restoration workshop, artist rehearsal spaces and an intimate recital room. But beyond the beautiful instruments lies something even more precious: a commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians.
Under the leadership of newly appointed director of sales & marketing, Nicola Le – a London-born leader with deep roots in luxury and music – the Hall is stepping confidently into its next chapter. “Steinway Hall London is steeped in history, legacy and human connection,” says Nicola. “As we celebrate 150 years, our focus is on the future – combining craftsmanship and innovation through technologies like Spirio, while inspiring the next generation of musicians.”
To mark this momentous anniversary, Steinway & Sons has unveiled the 150th Anniversary Limited Edition – a handcrafted piano built in Hamburg specifically to honour Steinway Hall London’s remarkable journey and enduring commitment to musical excellence.
A Family Affair
Some stories deserve special mention. Three generations of the Glazebrook family have devoted their lives to Steinway Hall London since its opening. Today, Keith Glazebrook leads the Steinway Schools Programme, supporting emerging talent across the UK. Then there’s the technician who joined straight out of college in 1990, planning to stay “a few years.” Thirty-five years later, he’s still there – and even met his wife while tuning pianos at St John’s Smith Square. These are the human connections that transform a business into a legacy.
The Heart of Craftsmanship
While Steinway embraces innovation – such as Spirio | r, a sophisticated player-piano system that captures and reproduces live performances with stunning precision – the soul of every instrument remains unchanged. Each Steinway grand piano takes approximately a year to create, handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail in just two factories worldwide: Hamburg and New York.
Looking Forward
As Steinway Hall London celebrates 150 years, it does so with gratitude for an extraordinary past and excitement for an equally promising future. With its unwavering dedication to excellence, innovation and emerging artists, the Hall remains what it has always been: a beacon for music lovers, a home for artists and a celebration of what happens when craftsmanship meets passion.
